Finest ever

This is, in my opinion, the finest horror movie ever made. Bela's performance is captivating - both sinister and hilarious at the same time. I cant think of a single other movie so jam packed with classic dialogue.

Yet in the IMDB bio for Irene Ware, it said this film was called by reviewers "the worst horror film of 1935" and effectively ended her career!! Of course it is now a classic due to the performances of Karloff and Lugosi.

their prior movie "the black cat" seemed to be the one getting more praised as i was looking around deciding on which to order, so i got in mind that was superior to this (i haven't seen that yet), still i liked the plot to this better, even though the actual movie has karloff credited first in bigger letters bela lugosi is the only one on the dvd front cover. i was surprised they were the same height on the screen. extraordinary how today's so common plastic surgery was used as a horror theme in old movies (dark passage, 1947, the twilight zone - number 12 looks just like you, 1964.), i thought perhaps bela lugosi didn't need to mess up karloff's appearance to make him follow his orders, as bela lugosi was laughing in the fun house looking laboratory it gave me the indication that was inspiration to a very similar scene in "the man with the golden gun" (1974), and also the setting inspiration for "elvira's haunted hills" (2001), reading your comment i guess it's very well possible this actually has been inspiration for much. bela lugosi has a way of expressing anguish so convincingly, it almost feels like the industry should have picked up more on that. for a while i thought karloff would turn into a hero part, but it isn't until the girl will get crushed that he decides to stop it, i mean there already were a guy on the bench, but after all he does save all of their fates, the movie does not show his and bela's gruesome fate, but it's all implied, can you imagine what a field day a modern horror flick would have had with that? goodness.
