I think the attempt by the reviewer to describe it as communist kitsch really misses the point, this was visionary in so many ways and it gets tiring to see every western review of a film made in the period 1917-1991 get the inevitable "communist propaganda" tag, as though western films are somehow free of hegemonic discourse and the aesthetics of taste. Disney films are inscribed with the fields of power and knowledge just as much as "Soviet" cinema, its just we do not tend to see it that way because we are also embedded in those fields.

I cannot recommend this highly enough, the special effects alone make it worth watching, and like the work of the visionary Russian science-fiction and space travel film-maker, Pavel Klushantsev are often completely ignored in most discussions (aside from a footnote or two).
