Duck Soup or A Night at the Opera?

Okay, I'm posing the big Marx question to all you you: Duck Soup or A Night at the Opera? Which is the best Marx movie?

Gimme my Duck Soup anytime anywhere!

I mean I like ANATO but IMO Duck Soup is the best movie by the Marx Bros by a long shot!

reply

Duck Soup. All the singing in ANATO really slows the film down.

Between those two I prefer Duck Soup, but my favorite MArx Bros movie is Monkey Business.

Duck Soup, but not by a very long stretch (although it's been a while since I've seen it). I just came back from seeing A Night at the Opera tonight, and it wasn't quite as gonzo-rific as Duck Soup, but it has some of the great comic set-pieces in movies; just the scene where they all cram into the room is just about perfect. And, of course, when they argue about the contracts, that's great. It's almost TOO polished, but I guess that's the point; all that money had to go somewhere, and it's got it all. Duck Soup is more focused on its satire, and just goes completely off the deep end in the last 10 minutes or so (if it hadn't before then), but it's for the better.

Two of the best comedies of the 30s, it's hard to decide, like choosing between the awesome disturbing slightly older child and the younger more sweet child.

A Night At The Opera is my favourite Marx Brothers film, and one of my favourite movies of all. Maybe it being the first of the Brothers' films that I saw biases me a bit - it just drew me in straight away, and the combination of hilarious comedy and wonderful music is just superb.

I liked better A Night at the Opera... it's funnier than Duck Soup.

Just adding my contribution: I prefer Duck Soup as a film; A Night at the Opera had too much (bad) singing, which I found as a slight let-down. Agreed, Duck Soup had some musical moments which were a bit... bizarre, but I still find it a winner.

And before someone comes along and calls me a Philistine, well, I do like the music in Marx movies, especially Chico with his piano and Harpo with his... harp, but A Night at the Opera's singing was... argh!! It may be the quality of the film, but that ain't no opera singing!!

Duck Soup will always be my favorite. The ending is just so classic. Hilarity at its best.

'Duck Soup' is a Marx Brothers movie.
'A Night at the Opera' is a traditional MGM musical that has the Marx Brothers in it.

'Duck Soup,' by a mile.
