Good movie

Just saw it for the first time.

Me, too! I just sorta "discovered" Fredric March a few weeks ago, and had been wanting to see this film (love the "Les Miz" story, anyway) and was not disappointed! Thank goodness I saw yesterday that TCM was showing it tonight!

what movie did you discover him in missya? just curious. he was excellent in 'a star is born.' i got chills just writing about this. great movie and acting.

Well, I'd been wanting to see "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" (1931) for quite awhile, then more recently caught the tail-end of "Inherit the Wind" on TCM and was very impressed by Fredric March's performance ("Ah! Dr. Jekyll, I presume!", I thought. lol).

So in searching the 'Net for some DJ&MH footage, I came across a great youtube clip of (an older) Freddie on "What's My Line" in 1954. This "serious dramatic actor" was actually quite funny and he totally stumped the panel!

At one point he was asked, "Do ladies swoon over you in pictures?", to which he replied, "NO!" Well, a few ladies' comments QUITE strongly disagreed with that, one example being, "He lied--the ladies greatly swooned over Fredric March! This one still does :)" Oh, THAT got me "March"ing off to see as many of his films as I can, and so far it's around 20 (but not DJ&MH yet).

"A Star us Born" was the first movie of his I saw in its entirety, and I was nearly in tears at the end! He was awesome! His performance in "Death Takes A Holiday" sent shivers up my spine with his suave, erotic, yet "dangerous" persona. He was so good at "blending into" whatever character he portrayed, all of varying personalities. Today, I think he's one of classic Hollywood's most least-remembered leading men, but his peers always considered him one of the finest actors ever - and I totally agree!

(I also now consider Fredric March quite "swoonable"! )

I've not yet seen "Desperate Hours" but I want to! I hear it's very well done!

"We Live Again" I have seen and yes, as always, Freddie displays some great acting chops! HA! "Suppose we all took our clothes off!", he exclaims to the old ladies! ;-)

Actually, I used several clips from that movie for my own Freddie tribute video on youtube. Here's the url if you're interested: http://youtu.be/0B3X1M6NbzM

I had never seen "Les Miserables" (this version or any other) and I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it, but I did enjoy it a lot and will want to check out some of the other versions some day.

Question: Is the musical version similar to the film, except with music (obviously) or do they take certain things out?

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

reply

Can't believe no one's apparently replied to you yet!

I'd say the musical is very similar to the film; the Innkeepers are a hoot in their songs. The music is very, very good with lots of unforgettable and very moving songs. I think it just enhances the story quite nicely!

Hope that helps.
