Crazy.


I caught this on TCM this morning. I agree the weird casting was a product of the times, but great fun to watch.

First time I saw this, yeah, crazy was one way to describe it, lol. But I agree, at the end of the day, it's hilarious in its own quirky way, and that's what a Shakespeare comedy should be.

I know they took a lot of flack for the casting at the time, but personally I like how uniquely American it is. Like how James Cagney (Bottom) and Ross Alexander (Demetrius) don't even really bother to cover up their New Yorkese. 😊 Incidentally, I once found an old interview with Alexander, and of Midsummer he said, "I'd go home screwy after a day with those lines," lol. He had good comedic timing though; his reactions to Helena are priceless. An actor who was taken from us far too soon.

Personally, I thought MR was spot on and thought ODH wasn't bad.
