Kathleen Burke never had good luck in Hollywood...

Back in August, I had entered in a message board under "Island of Lost Souls" (which had aired for the first time on Turner Classic Movies on a Friday or Saturday night, on an August 18th showing) how Kathleen Burke, playing Lota the Panther woman, had me amazed. I was wondering as to why this exotically-gorgeous actress lasted only five years in show business...now, I answered my own question when, upon watching "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer"(1935) last night (12/28/06)on TCM, where the actress played Khan's scheming moll Tania, she seldom had any lines at all, only numerous appearances here and there...most disappointing! The producers could have easily spun-out a romantic relationship between her and the colonel's son before the latter falls into Khan's trap; anything to make Burke stand out as a female lead. Instead, they gave her the old "bits-and-pieces" routine. I own a DVD with Burke in her last credited year (1938) as an actress, in "Boy of the Streets" with Jackie Cooper. She had a few more lines and a bit more character here than in "Island..." Her last film was "Rascals" which was shot and released that same year, and then she disappeared into obscurity. I get the feeling the producers in Paramount Pictures or the other studios she was contracted to (temporarily no doubt) most likely never gave her the time of day. The way I see it, she probably got fed up, threw in the towel, and called it quits, probably to pursue a career in dentistry? (From what I understand, she was a dental assistant before she actually won the role of Panther woman, in a national contest, for "Island of Lost Souls"(1933); the poor albeit voluptuous woman, in all likelihood, wound up being type-casted!) If any movie fan out there can provide any info - ANY AT ALL!! - in reference to Kathleen Burke, please by all means feel free to reply to this message. Thanks and happy movie viewing!
