Shocking movie

Having read some of the reviews and posts on IMDb, I'm SHOCKED to learn that this movie, alone among the gazillions of that era, apparently fails to faithfully represent the historical context in which it's set. I'm SHOCKED that the producers went ahead anyway in blatant defiance of the disgust that the movie would attract 70+ years later from the morally pure viewers of the present era. Did the studio really think that they were entitled to entertain people in the Depression years rather than cater for the sensitivities of an affluent generation of the next millennium? What could they have been thinking?
