we finally see E. Horton in a bad guy role

small time crook, running from the law.
although he is still dressed to the nines, as they say.

he was always so prim and proper.
if you haven't seen him in Lost Horizon, check it out.
Top Hat and Gay Divorcee were also fun!

Not really a bad guy - just a rather comical shill for Armstrong's straight con man. His character is not too different from his usual characters, but he is on the wrong side of the law, which is different and fun to see. I loved the scene where Horton slugs the gangster in the hallway. Imagine Edward Everett Horton resorting to actual fisticuffs!

Ha-guessing you both just caught this movie on Turner!
Horton was great in this movie-I wasn't even sure it was him (thought maybe it was a look-alike)due to it being such a different role for him.
Kind of a strange movie though-orphans and dead dogs in a sort-of comedy.

Yep! Just saw it! Parts seemed vaguely familiar, so I may have seen it long ago, but didn't recollect it clearly. You are right - very unusual film that, nonetheless, worked for me. The young girl, Sybil Jason, was captivating - definitely on a par with Shirley Temple. I always love Glenda Farrell. And Robert Armstrong was his reliable, strong-guy presence. The combination of violence, tragedy, pathos, comedy and happy ending was an odd cocktail that was mixed in just the right proportions to appeal to me.

I think it's sad that Sybil Jason was such a talented little girl but a few years later was playing second banana to Shirley Temple. Then to quit films when she was only about 13......

Agreed! Her impersonations are absolutely amazing! Her Mae West body language and eye-rolls are perfect. LOL
