Finally, In Person on Quality DVD!

Of course no US studio has the brains to make such a release, but a Spanish one has finally produced a commercial quality DVD of "In Person"! You need an all-region player.

Well, as Penny Carroll said to Lucky Garnett, "Save your money!"

I'm sorry to say this new DVD of "In Person" is not much of an improvement over other versions currently available online; the visual quality is low, not nearly as good as I had expected. My VHS is higher quality.

The DVD does come, however, with a very fine booklet, containing a detailed analysis of the film as the one that established Ginger's stardom as a "solo" actress, a breathless appreciation of her dancing in the film, lovely photos of Ginger, glossy reprints of lobby cards from the film, and substantial praise for the director William Seiter (photo), George Brent (several photos), Alan Mowbray and Grant Mitchell (all text in Spanish).

But it's a lot to pay for a booklet, no matter how fine.

Mybad. I made this negative assessment of the new "In Person" DVD too hastily. I hadn't watched the whole film, but just sampled a couple of scenes, and they were unluckily chosen.

In fact, this DVD is considerably better than the VHS from Turner, except that you can't disable the Spanish subtitles (there is an option to do so but it doesn't function). The DVD image is brighter than the VHS, so actors' faces can be seen much better, and textures of clothing and furniture and details in the background are more visible as well. The sound is also superior. All this said, it is still not top-quality visually, but there are probably no remaining prints in top condition. It's the best version yet on DVD, so now I recommend the DVD!

Also, as I mentioned, the accompanying booklet is superfine. So maybe treat someone for Christmas!
