The dictionary first lists joyous, lively, merry, happy, light-hearted for "gay". Definition #5 is homosexual, especially male.

So, the term has been hijacked today to mean only homosexual. How sad and childish.

The original meaning comes from a French word for homosexual though, so it's not inappropriate to reserve the word for that meaning.
