What was the 'misunderstanding' between Alan and Gerald?

I came in late for this movie. What was the "misunderstanding" between Alan and Gerald?

It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I seem to remember an obnoxious English soldier spotting Alan (Frederic March) at the inn bringing dinner up to Kitty (Merle Oberon) the night before Alan is to leave for the front. Alan and Kitty are engaged to be married.

At the docks, Alan and Gerald meet and the obnoxious English soldier intervenes, mentioning Alan at the inn the night before. Gerald assumes that Alan has "picked up" a prostitute instead of Kitty at the inn and so Gerald thinks of Alan as having been unfaithful towards Kitty.
