Beautiful Hospital at the end of movie?

It is probably in LA. Does anyone know if it is still there? It is such a beautiful Art Deco building....

reply

Yes it is still there but no longer in use. It is General Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. It is shown in the opening of the old soap opera, "General Hospital". You can also see Joan Crawford being wheeled into it in "Possessed", (the second "Possessed" film she was in), as she has gone crazy and must be committed to the "Psychopathic Ward".

I think the only part of that building that is still in use today is the morgue. I have a friend who volunteered time at that morgue, and he said that the building is a very, very creepy place.

Thanks so much for the info.

Sounds ripe for a re purposing!

The magnificent Art Deco hospital seen in the 1947 Possessed is not "Los Angeles General". It was always Los Angeles County Hospital, in Boyle Heights, not downtown, and is now known as Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center. There's a new medical center adjacent to the old building, part of which is still open, but it no longer operates as a hospital, because it doesn't meet the state's seismic standards.

Any building that is left partially or wholly abandoned, falling into a state of disrepair, might be considered "creepy". I prefer to thik of it as "historic".

My father-in-law was a doctor there in the 1970's and he called it L. A. General, and it's perfectly fine to refer to Boyle Heights as "downtown ", because it most definitely is down town!

It's not General Hospital. It's the old Cedars of Lebanon Hospital on Fountain Ave which merged with Cedars-Sinai and then moved out in the 1970s. Today the building is the Church of Scientology HQ. It's painted BLUE today.

@bobo-29.

In the 1941 movie "Hold Back the Dawn," there's a reference to Los Angeles General Hospital. Boyer illegally parks his car in front and there's a good view of the front of the hospital. It doesn't appear to be the same building though.

Haven't seen Hold Back The Dawn in years so cannot even remember the hospital scene. Cedars of Lebanon was Marilyn Monroe's go to "favorite" hospital when she would check in for some operation or just for a rest. There is a Los Angeles General Hospital in Boyle Heights. That's the hospital image used in the TV soap opera. Both hospitals have large ascending staircases, maybe that's making for the confusion.

Marilyn was born at L.A. General, which had fallen on hard times by the 1960's.

It's the same building, but "Los Angeles General" is a fictitious name used in Hold Back the Dawn.

Yikes to that BLUE redo!

bobo, you nailed it. That's the hospital at the end of Dangerous
