Did anyone else fancy John Boles??

John Boles is the actor who plays the guy who adopts Curly and her sister. He was fine for an older, old movie type. Anyone else??

Wow, cool! Yes, he is what you'd call 'dashing'!

PS: I love this film!

FYI - There are three huge hand colored portraits of 1930s actors hanging in the mezzanine of the Spreckles Theatre in San Diego, California; one, of which, is the University of Texas alumni John Boles.

His connection to the theatre is unknown. The University was contacted, but the reply stated that they are not involved with acquisitions. Perhaps, the actor's descendants may be interested in this information.

I fell in love with him the first time I saw Curly Top. I was very young maybe even the age Shirely Temple was in the movie, could be some 45 years ago.

You're not alone in that! John Boles was an astonishingly handsome man, who got even handsomer as he got older! Quite a dish!

He was a very handsome man but I thought he was too old for Mary. I wanted her to end up with Jimmie but I see how that wouldn't have worked for the story. Mary would have taken her sister with her leaving Edward on his own and brokenhearted. Curly top also preferred Edward so she'd be just as unhappy.

We couldn't have a happy ending if Elizabeth was unhappy. Besides, Mary couldn't marry Jimmie because she didn't love him. She accepted his proposal only because she thought Edward, the man she loved, didn't care for her.

Jimmie had an attitude problem and I couldn't see him being nice to Curly. It would also have been very ungrateful for the two girls to up and leave Edward. If Mary had married Jimmie, Curly should have stayed with Edward, his Aunt and Reynolds. Mary could have visited.

It's been a while since I saw this movie but I don't remember Jimmie having an attitude problem or being unfriendly towards Curly. He was young, inexperienced, and probably immature so that may have presented a challenge. Other than that, I didn't see a problem.

It would also have been very ungrateful for the two girls to up and leave Edward.
In my opinion, gratitude is a terrible reason to stay with someone. Mary claimed she was in love with Edward so we have to take her at her word. However, it's also possible what she felt was really, in whole or in part, gratitude.

If Mary had married Jimmie, Curly should have stayed with Edward, his Aunt and Reynolds. Mary could have visited.
That wouldn't have worked. Remember, their parents wanted Curly to stay with Mary. That's why she continued to work at the school even though she had aged out and probably could have done better for herself elsewhere. She could have just as easily visited Curly at the orphanage but she didn't. That's why I think Mary may have 'fallen' in love with Edward.

Mary (or better yet, the screenwriters) knew she was 'of age'. In those days it would not have been advisable for a young woman to live with an unrelated man. Sure, he was adopting them but she was too old. Everyone would have assumed it was a ruse used to keep her around; much like some guys always had a multitude of young attractive 'nieces' on their arm. It would have caused whispers and gossip which could have led to a scandal that would have had a negative impact on every part of their lives including Edwards' business.

Besides, Edward was available, he seemed to be a nice guy, he treated them well, he was attractive, successful, and Curly cared for him. Mary realized being with him was the best possible situation for all involved. Unless he repulsed her, which he did not, she wasn't doing too poorly for herself either. She knew she could never leave her sister behind; at least not while she was still so young. She was going to eventually marry someone, why not Edward?
