Why prices were too high when they in Dawson?

If i am not wrong the film set during 1890s. But prices too high when they just entered to town. For example shave $5.00, haircut $10.00, steak $20.00

Because of gold?

I assume it's because of the lack of competition. If you're the only barber in town and your clientele probably hadn't had a shave in months because they were out in the wild, you get to set your prices as high as you'd like.

now it began to make sense. i actually haven't thought this way. thanks.

It was because of the gold rush, people had money and the market could beat it.

The issue of prices in Dawson going through the roof was also used in The Far Country.
