The best horror sequel of all time?

Is Bride of Frankenstein the best horror sequel ever? (Yes): http://www.cutprintfilm.com/features/good-horror-sequels/

reply

I'd say so. It's at least up there among the best, if not THE best

Bride of Frankenstein, Aliens, and Terminator 2 are the three best horror movie sequels. They all top their first film. Oddly enough, they all mostly abandoned the horror element in favour of comedy, action, or drama. Evil Dead 2 is another genre hopper that is much better than its predecessor, but it's nowhere near the same class of greatness Bride, Aliens, and T2 are.

reply

Aliens doesn't belong on that list because the writing and directing took a step down. James Cameron can't compete even when he's imitating a classic. He turned an intelligent thriller into a big dumb action movie.

The other sequels are better simply because the originals weren't very good.

In my opinion it's not only the best horror sequel, it's also the best sequel of all time. The only sequels that I feel challenge Bride are The Godfather Part II, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Dark Knight.

Agreed.
Aliens was a cheezy action pic
Alien was art!

Terminator 2, a horror? I question if you've even seen the film.

"addams family values" i've noticed is much more accessible than the first, also none of the other monsters has used as much stock footage of its original as the frankenstein sequels, what hit me is how boris karloff is credited in huge letters before the title and i just thought it seemed funny the female didn't get the same credit considering the very title, then to top that off the role is credited at the very bottom nameless with a question mark connected to it (monster's mate..........?), i now know why though, the actress looks much hotter as the monster, women in old movies are usually made up so incredibly boring. cloris leachman was very well cast and suited in the mel brooks' spoof of frankenstein "young frankenstein" she looks just like the actress in this and maybe because of that i wasn't sure if it was suppose to be a bit of a funny role, also the blind violin player in this is spoofed in young frankenstein, my favorite parts in these movies is when the monster finds someone he can trust, like here you've got the violin player and the wolf man had the gypsy woman, and i always wish those encounters would continue longer of the running time. i've heard that this was considered superior to the first frankenstein movie, it's easy to see why (though i don't remember much of the original), you can't exactly say the same about the other universal monster sequels, i guess that's why this was featured in the great dvd box mix of monsters released several times. this is the second old movie i've seen in a short while where an old lady smokes a pipe. this was really a rich diverse extraordinary movie, i can't believe how moving it was. you wish flicks like these could air on tv and not constantly re running modern mainstream movies.

I reckon that it is the horror sequel too. Although I still prefer it's original. 'Frankenstein' (1931). That's the best Universal horror I would say.

I can't judge these old horror films in the context of the times because they were well before me, so I don't really enjoy them. With the advances in filming technology and the ridiculous acting prevalent in those times, it's hard to get into them. Although the underlying story of a lot of them are quite good.

Better than Jaws 2 or Nightmare on Elm Street 2?
