I didn't like it

It was very boring and very few artistic merits, I have to wonder if at the time was this a prestigious project or simply a b movie? I tried watching the original and I couldn't, it was so boring and badly acted.

Universal's horror movies from the 1931-1936 were A-list movies with big budgets for the time. Universal's head of production Carl Laemmle Jr. took horror movies very seriously, and they were among Universal's 'tentpole' movies (to use a modern term) in their release schedule.

Interesting, I wouldn't have guessed judging by their reputation, would that include Creature of the Black Lagoon? They just seemed b movies to me given that they have no famous actors and so on.

Creature from the Black Lagoon was produced about 20 years after Whale's Frankenstein movies. By the 1950s, many of the Universal Monster movies were B-movies, so-called "Monster Mashes," comedy team-ups with Abbott and Costello, and science fiction movies. I think Creature from the Black Lagoon had more studio support from Universal than its contemporaries, and it was the last hurrah of the Universal Monster series.

The Universal Monster movies of the early 30s - especially Dracula, Frankenstein, the Bride, the Invisible Man, and the Mummy - really didn't need big names to be successful (although The Invisible Man had Claude Raines). What you consider to be dull and slow at the time was actually exciting and shocking to audiences of that era (Frankenstein was even censored by a number state film advisory boards).

I am curious - what brought you to the decision to watch Bride of Frankenstein?

reply

I don't know, I think I saw some pictures online and wanted to see them, but I'm a fan of old movies, I'm familiar with the slower pace and I must say I have seen old movies that are as riveting and interesting as anything today, like Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard, I was at the edge of my seat, so I often wonder if the boring old movies were boring even for audiences back then.

I feel sorry for people like OP.
