Same here! 

She was totally awesome in anything, even drama (The Informer, 1935), and her swan song, Witness for the Prosecution, is truly unforgettable, just to mention a few ones.

Great in 'Robin Hood' also.

H.G. Wells stated that he had some misgivings with how James Whale adapted his novel in The Invisible Man, but he praised O'Connor's performance (which was basically identical to the character she played in Bride of Frankenstein).

That's so cool to know! Thanks for sharing! And yes, both characters and performances are kind of similar, even though in The Invisible Man it was better developed. Wish "Minnie" had been given more minutes on screen.

Yea, shes was my favorite character in this movie and also The Invisible Man

You crazy man. Una O'Connor is awesome. Did you see her in 'The Sea Hawk' with Errol Flynn. So good. Adventures of Robin Hood too. Loved her in Bride as well. Over the top and annoying, but it all works somehow. Adds to the campy effect that made that movie such an enduring classic.

I thought she was funny and amusing. We watched this in a class called Art of Cinema I took in high school and I looked around to see people's reactions when she was onscreen. 

She was horrible. She was apparently acting in a totally different movie than everyone else.

No - pay more attention to all the winky, sly comedy going on.

James Whale part of the time was trolling the audience - the monster puffing cigars, tiny implausible people acting very unnaturally for their predicament, Minnie, on and on.

I watched the original Frankenstein with my friend who'd never seen it a week from yesterday. Then yesterday we watched this one which he also never saw. He said that woman being over the top and silly brought the tone down too much. It's funny cause any scene without her is really dramatic and then she acts over the top and silly and the tone just changes to sillieness. Like the part where the Monster kidnaps Henry's wife Elizabeth and she's screaming and acting so over the top and Colin Clive looks more annoyed than scared. My friend hated her too. I won't speak for the actress since this is the only movie with her I've seen. I saw Invisible Man a long time ago but know she was in it and acts just as over the top in that as she does in this.

Maybe people didn't care about stuff like that back in the 30s but they do now. I do think the original has a better tone. I think the only improved things is the Monster learning to talk and some of the scenes with Henry. I missed Henry's father in this. I'd rather have had him instead of the over the top screaming woman.

I agree that Minnie brought the tone down. She almost killed the fantastic atmosphere. Gives me the urge to fast-forward when I see her, but then I'll miss too much of the rest.

LOVED Una!
She was fab!!!
I truly loved her in Robin Hood.

That's okay. The fans are divided between hate and love for Una's work.

It's interesting to me that half of the replies have treated the OP's brief comment as a referendum not on "Minnie" the character, but on O'Connor the actress.

I'm among those who have a great appreciation for the work of Una O'Connor in various films. But I'm also among those who feel the character of "Minnie" as written and played is intrusive and out of place in this one.

Poe! You are...avenged!

I remember when I first saw this movie, I presumed that Minnie was going to end up being killed and her body would be used to build the bride.

reply

That's a horrible thought!

reply

That would have been a great idea to have Elsa as the Bride but her voice dubbed by Minnie. I would have loved to hear her scream in the castle when she meets the Monster

Una O'Connor made a living playing obnoxious women. She was really over-the-top in this one. In addition to the titles mentioned in this thread, she was also the tobacco shop keeper in RANDOM HARVEST who gives shell-shocked Ronald Colman a bad time when he wanders in. Greer Garson calls her "that witch". I must agree.
