Do you all know.......

Does any one know if there is a remake of this film called "They Drive by Night"? It has the same basic plot line and everything else. Instead of a night club its a trucking business. I know they used to remake a lot of films back then for some reason or another but I didn't realize so soon. LOL! What does everyone think?
Does any one know where the litter box is at???

The studios frequently recycled plots in the 1930s and 1940s, and THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT was indeed a remake of BORDERTOWN, which Warners had made only 5 years previously. A space of only 5 years between versions wasn't unsual: the classic 1941 version of THE MALTESE FALCON was the 3rd filming of the Dashiell Hammett novel in 10 years, but the third time was the charm: it hasn't been necessary to remake it again.

Those of you who think you know everything should politely defer to those of us who actually do!

I see this connection posted on IMDb's pages for both films, and I see some people noticing some general similarities, but these two movies are NOTHING alike. Muni plays a Mexican-American lawyer who gets disbarred in Bordertown, while George Raft & Humphrey Bogart play truck-driving brothers trying to make their way as independents in TDBN. The major similarity is the Muni & Raft characters being hounded by their boss's wives. That's as vague a connection as I can imagine; there are surely dozens of films with a similar plot point. Look at the writing credits for the two films and show me anyone who was involved in writing both. There isn't one. Smells like misinformation to me, and TDBN is a much better movie to 21st century eyes anyway.

The similarity is remarkable-on some points only.Ida Lupino(Bette Davis) is married to Alan Hale(Eugene Pallette) and looks down at the key in the ignition as she decides to walk out thru the electric eye garage door opener and kill her husband by carbon monoxide poisoning so nothing stands in the way of her spurned love for George Raft(Paul Muni).She/they are rejected by him/them because they love another woman.She/they run to the DA to confess to the murder, saying they were forced to do it. That's the only, but large piece of,plot similarity between the two.
