Were we supposed to like Muni's character?

I couldn't believe he just left Bette Davis, the owner of the night club, waiting on the opening night. Why didn't she get a taxi? When he rejected her, couldn't she have just fired him and got another manager? And how could he have rolled out the red carpet for the people who got him disbarred? Also, he was just too pushy.
