Great movie!

Wonderfully filmed and acted. The scenery is creepy, with the black cat tavern and the cemeteries and castle. Boris Karloff does a great job in the duo role, Marian Marsh is not only super hot, but sympathetic as well, but to me, the real star of the show was the dog!

SPOILER.........................
I do not see the dog credited on IMDB but he should be. Not only fights off some would be assassins, but also reveals the bad guy to the town, and does him in as well! haha... great stuff.

Most definitely with this film we have it all ( and of course this one is very ahead of it's time as well ) . Boris Karloff times 2 what a treat lol , lovely and talented lady actresses like Marian Marsh ( and Katherine DeMille ) , and last but not least our four legged hero of the story " the family dog " ( he had a name but I forget what it was - it was mentioned in the movie ) . I also was looking for an IMDB Profile on this wonderful creature ( after I first saw this film ) and you are right beavertoof - nothing there . It's too bad this fine canine didn't get the credit he so deserved ( sad sigh ) . Another lost treasure of a movie for us to discover ( thank you FEARNET On-Demand ! ) .

Yay for Tal (sp.?) the dog!

I watched this on On Demand too. Had never known of it. There's a lot of dreck on On Demand, but if one patiently sifts through the titles and checks for reviews somewhere, there are rewards to be had. Have watched a couple good movies on there the last two days, and I've got several more queued up.

I upgraded my cable almost a year ago to FIOS . I'm so hooked on the free On-Demand section especially the movies from FEARNET . So many great and lost treasures of movies there . Some I remember well from years ago and some I just discovered for the very first time too ( like this one for instance lol ) . So when I see them I just have to pass these subject posts along to the fellow fans that appreciate them as much as I do . I agree Bou " Tal the dog " was my top favorite character in this movie too . Thanks Bou for your replies and enjoy the On-Demand movie experience .

Totally agree re the dog! His name in the movie appears to be Tal, but no, there's no credit listed, no animal trainer, no nuttin'. All the way from the start I figured that dog would be a hero, and how. Magnificent animal, too.

The captions (which could be wrong) refer to the dog as "Thor."

Did you watch this movie last night on TCM like I did ? I saw that on the captions too . Yes you are right " Thor the dog " was his name . He looked liked such a sweet and loyal dog too our hero of the story lol what a character . Thanks Fleur_de_lis for your reply .

Yes, I caught it the other night on TCM. They've had all of the old Karloff films on. And it was on Antenna TV this morning too.

The plot is a riot. After generations of nonsense, and a series of recent murders, the dog finally takes matters into his own hands.

I loved the scene where, after the wedding, the dog just forms a posse and the villagers all follow him. Then as they are breaking down the door, the dog is right there at the front of the pack. Good stuff.

They just don't make them as clever as these great old films anymore . Solid storylines are always the way to go ( add a bit of closed captioning to our loyal TV sets , some popcorn , and we never have to leave the house to see a film again ? lol - just got to love TCM for that ) . I so like it when the faithful canine is added as a main character in these wonderful old films . This is the movie that makes us cheer - " Thor our Hero ! " lol .

Check out dead Ringer with Bette Davis. I believe it was on that same night of evil twins. A great dane comes to the rescue there as well.

I did watch " Dead Ringer " that night too another excellent movie ! I forgot about that scene . I will have to watch this movie again ( only saw it once ) . Thanks Fleur_de_lis for bringing up that scene ( very good eye on that ) and your reply .

Yes, I saw "Thor" too, when he was told to be quiet.
