Goldwyn didn't make up the title...

...he stole it from Herbert Asbury's popularized "history" of the San Francisco underworld, which was published in 1933, two years before the movie came out. Presumably Asbury is uncredited in the film.

It is a great book, but.......the name Barbary Coast (as stated in Mr.Asbury's book) is older than motion pictures and his tome on the subject.
Great read though, all his books are highly recommendable.
