interior scenes - driving me nuts

OK, in the interior scenes, it seems there is a round thing in the corner of the room, like a bulge in the wall. Not describing it right, the whole wall from floor to ceiling is rounded out in the corners. THis was in more than one character's house.
Was this part of the heating system or what? I've never been to Russia so I haven't a clue. ANyone know?

Well,
I just saw this movie yesterday and wondered the same. I have assumed that it is some kind of a heater. I've seen the movie Amadeus many times, and it is set in Eastern Europe in the late 1700's, and ornate apartments shown in that movie have the same round devices against the walls.

I have always just thought it to be some sort of fireplace/furnace something or another.

Yes. It is part of the heating system. Think of a fireplace that heats four rooms at one time with the smoke rising up the chimney. They are common in older houses in Europe. Hope you come back to sanity. LOL.

flat0903, do you mean it covers four corners of adjoining rooms with the chimney between the walls? Ingenious, but sounds kind of dangerous! Mean-reds, Amadeus has one of my favorite sets of all time!
