Hard not to love Kate

It must have been hard for the Academy to decide between Kate and Bette in 1935. I loved Kate in Alice Adams because I could relate to her so much of wanting to fit in where I don't belong. My favorite scene is after she returns from the party from which she was a wallflower comes into her bedroom, and closes the window crying with the rain. And Hattie McDaniel, gosh, she was hilarious! She should've been nominated for Alice before showing off her full potential in Gone With The Wind.

True...even Bette has said Kate deserved this one. Both terrific, though.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom. Maybe that's the trouble with me.

I've never been a huge Hepburn fan but I have to say that the early scene at the party -- where she keeps the smile on her face and maintains the cheerful, upbeat attitude while suffering disappointment, heartbreak and humiliation -- is among the most moving performances I have ever seen on film.

I agree I felt for her and her humiliation at being totally ignored. This is why it is so wonderful that she gets the rich guy at the end that everyone wants. Also the the fact that everyone knew that Fred MacMurray liked her and they still talked bad about her. Nasty people.

It is said that it is because of Hattie's stellar performance in this that the Supporting category was added. They couldn't nominate her as the star, so the extra award was decided upon because minor characters were giving great performances. So, they finally got to award Hattie for another remarkable role.

She's an important part of this wonderful film.
