What made you laugh the hardest?

For me, when everyone took their seats in the living room before dinner and Mrs Adam chose the piano bench then accidently played a note with her elbow. I had to keep replaying it, laughing louder and louder.

"Ain't life grand?" Clyde Barrow.

- Alice and her brother going to the party in that rickety-funny car.

- Hattie McDaniel's performance.

- The dinner scene, when the whole family try to be "elegant".

Hattie McDaniels stole the show. I love it when she serves the cavier sandwiches, and Mr. Adams balks at it, and she shoves the tray at him. Also, during the big dinner when a brussel sprout falls on the table, and she gets a fancy piece of silver to wisk it off the table, while chewing her gum.

reply

Just love the way she chews her gum!

When Hattie McDaniel's hairpiece was falling off.

"Mr. Rawitch, what you are I wouldn't eat."
"How dare you call me a ham?"

reply

Hattie McDaniels should have been a mega-star! She is always 100% right on target with her performances. A talented actress who deserved better roles!

reply

Hattie McDaniel was indeed a great star

When the dad is trying to eat the gawd awful caviar sandwitch and when Kath gets stuck dancing with the bad dancer. Soooo funny.

reply

Not funny in the least. Painful to watch. Clueless low-class people making fools of themselves.

reply

Exactly my thoughts. Whatta morbid comedy!
I feel pity for Arthur who got hooked on that neurotic fiddler prone to disgusting smalltalk logorrhea...
It looks like Alice's capable of a couple of seconds of sincerity only in totally extraordinary situation, so a sapper or a gangster would be a proper hubby for her:)

reply

Yes, Ripshin, but the interesting and funny part to me is why they are making fools of themselves. They're trying to impress Alice's beau by being good, but they don't realize they're already good, so all that remains of their efforts is humor.

I honestly don't understand what you're saying. Obviously, I got the point that they are trying to impress the guy, and making fools of themselves in the process, unnecessarily. Regardless, it is uncomfortable to watch, and their behavior is ignorant and ill thought-out. They come across as bumpkins and wanna-bes, not "good" and stable "folks" (which they aren't).

reply

Ah, I think that's the prerequisite for getting the humor: The audience has to realize the Adamses are good people, and then it's funny, because they're trying to be good. If you think they're trash, then their efforts just seem cheap and "ill thought-out", as you say.

I understand the film, thanks. And need no prerequisite for the "humor," such as it is, in that scene. They are not necessarily portrayed as "good people," per se, but it is indeed a matter of interpretation.

reply

I laughed the loudest when Mr. Adams's shirt opened and closed repeatedly during dinner.

reply

When the mom accidentally hit the piano key and when the dad threw his caviar into the fireplace!! And Hattie's gum chewing!!

the fact that I was so stupid to waste my time with this movie.
I really like classical movies....but this one is by far one of the ****

reply

We're with you, nelsinho...

We did not think it funny at all. Just awful.

Every scene with Hattie McDaniel

OMG the absolute funniest scene to me and my siblings is by far when Mr. and Mrs. Adams are bickering and getting all worked and loud when Alice has company, the scene is priceless, Virgil,"Dang, dang, dang"!! Mrs. Adams, 'til I die I tell you, TIL I DIE"!! Then sobbing dramatically with hand on hip and sucking in her bottom lip in that way that women did in 30's films.Cracks me up every time.

The TCM app had this film categorized as a comedy. Honestly, I did not laugh once. Then I see the IMDb listed it as comedy/drama/romance.
I found all of the characters sad and pathetic. The only one I liked was brother Walter and he was a bit sad too.
It may have been nominated for 2 Oscars (Best Picture and Best Actress), but one viewing was enough for this "classic".

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!
