Chucking pieces of ham on the floor??

They arrive at the Inn and the landlady serves them with a plate of ham sandwhiches. What gets me is the way Hannay just chucks the pieces of ham he doesn't want onto the floor? Little bit uncouth, don't you think?

reply

Typical behavior for Canadians.

Oh, stop it!! LOL LOL Apart from this, it does seem strange for a lovely old film to show someone just chucking food on the floor. Not sure what the author wanted to imply by this? Especially in Scotland, food couldn't have been that cheap?

reply

Didn't she also drop a piece of bread on the floor when she was taking off her stockings, and again later she threw a sandwich on the floor while she was on the bed.

(Was it beef or ham? I thought he ordered beef sandwiches..)

reply

Hi don't remember her dropping bread, or the like, on the floor. I will have to go and watch it again now!! :-D
I think it was ham he'd ordered ..... if you remember, he pulled a piece out and you could see the fatty part around the edge of the ham? LOL LOL LOL

No??? I don't remember him doing that?? I very well remember him preparing the fish because of the way he chuch the fish in a pan and cooked it!!! lol lol lol Do you know, I'm going to watch this damned film tonight!!! I will let you know, so wathc this space, as they say!!!

What I loved about this film is when they're lying on the bed and hes' making up stories of his family .... and Madam Tusauds .... so funny!! I was a squeamish child at first but soon got used to it!!! LOL LOL LOL

Take care xxxxxx

My family and I found the whole sandwich palaver hilariously random. Both the part where he casually takes the ham out and drops it on the floor like it is the most normal thing in the world, and the part where she's in the bed and throws the rest of her sandwich on the floor in disgruntlement are just so pointlessly random, and probably my favourite part!

In fact, the first time I watched this film I was very young, and when I watched it again last week (about 10 years later), one of the few scenes I could remember vividly was the hotel scene and the dropped ham. And I still loved it!

I think Donat ordered just "two sandwiches" and didn't specify what kind.

reply

That's a very strange act.
Now that I think about it, they did it because they were tied together.

reply

Yes, I know they were shackled together but he needn't have tossed it on the floor. Why not put it on the plate?

reply

I don't think they had a plate near them.

reply

But it was on the plate by Madeleine Carroll, wasn't it? He only had to reach over, despite being hand cuffed, he could easily have reached it.
I will have to watch it again to see, lol lol lol

reply

I don't recall this, but maybe Hannay did it to act up his wildman murderer of the Moors persona, to Madeleine Carroll.

reply

Gosh, clivey6, What a brilliant thought AND I can see this. Never thought of this before and I think you are right about this.
How come you don't recall this? It was when they both stayed in this remote place and he got her to sign the registry book because his right hand were in handcuffs. It was while they were in their room with their sandwiches, that he chucked a piece on the floor. I presume it was chewy? lol lol lol

reply

I don't think it was anything to do with him trying to show his "Wildman image". The girl did the same thing. I reckon it was the norm back then.

Look at all the old B&W movies, where people light up cigarettes in somebody's home, throw the burnt match an the floor and then flick the ashes on the floor as well.

True also Hannay was smoking while cooking the fish in his flat, nice

reply

Whats all thid got to do with the price of fish?

reply

When Hannah throws the bits of the sandwich away, they're seated directly in front of the fire, so presumably, that's where he chucks them.

When Pamela wakes up, she remembers one of her hands is shackled, the sandwich is now stale, so she pitches it aside to free up her hand to work on the handcuffs.

reply

Uncouth yes, but it was simply another scene for comedic effect.
