Jean Gabin

Watched this mainly because I'm a Jean Gabin fan. But this film is really more of a vehicle for Josephine Baker. There's not much story and the narrative jumps around a bit. Not worth it for fans of Gabin or fans of good French cinema but ok for fans of Baker, I suppose.

Reaction time is a factor in this, so please pay attention.

I also picked this film to see more of Jean Gabin's evolution as an actor over time - I was not disappointed at all by his performance - even if the screenplay had its occasional weak moments - as did the audio quality of the era.

But I also enjoyed seeing Josephine Baker for the first time - this seems to be one of her better film efforts, per the sparse reviews here. I learned a lot from this film about her talents, her style, her demeanor, and certainly her energy!

Not an Oscar-winning screenplay but a well-done performance,in the musical genre, by the leads and many of the lesser roles as well. Worth watching for fans of either Gabin or Baker!
