Tandem Actions.

Spoilers

I love the shots of two people doing the same actions in this film.

The fishing scene with father and son casting their lures in the river was wonderful.

The father and son both eating corn on the cob whilst playing Shoji.

And my favorite:

The scene when the stage props are being sold off. The buyer smells the mangy dog costume and everyone turns to look at the boy. The shot of Kihachi and another actor who are sitting cross-legged. They both turn to face the front at the same time. Ingenious comic effect.

Yeah, Ozu was brilliant at this. Check out I Was Born, But... (1932) if you haven't already. It uses synchronized actions between the film's two young boy protagonists to hilarious effect.
