Nick and Nora's relationship

They seem to have such a great marriage. I'd love to be in a relationship like theirs. Does anyone else see them as an ideal couple?

"Why do you find it so hard to believe?"
"Why do you find it so easy?"
"It's never BEEN easy!"

reply

The actors had amazing chemistry and amazing chemistry usually spells a great relationship. Nick and Nora were a good match.

reply

And they were clearly the pattern from which other movie and TV couples were modeled, like Hart to Hart and others.

Yes, I love their rapport. She gives it right back to him but they still adore each other.

reply

Yep. In fact Robert Wagner has said on several occasions that the Hart's relationship, and in fact many other aspects of the TV show, including their dog, was directly inspired by the Thin Man movies.

"Who's running this airline?!"

reply

Yes! Their first scene together tells us everything we need to know about them as a couple without making it feel like a forced introduction.

NORA: Now, how many drinks have you had?
NICK: This will make six martinis.

Just when you think she might lecture him she says:

All right. (To waiter) Will you bring me five more martinis, Leo, and line them right up here?

My wife and I both died laughing, then get another drink.

He punches her in the face to get her out of the line of gunfire, while anyone else would probably have just pushed her. He locks her in a room to keep her from accompanying him during an investigation. And he spanks her in front of his parents. No, I don't think they have a great marriage.

reply

Quit being a moron...

He did the thing he KNEW would move her. Locking her in a room so he could go out was to keep her from potential danger.

The spanking was more a show of slapstick, rather than malice. Also, (and more importantly) fewer people had sticks up their asses than they do today...made CHRYSTAL clear by your ignorant statements.

So he kept her from getting shot two different ways and joked with her in front of his parents. If you think that's a bad marriage I really don't know what you would think is a good marriage.

I think they have an awesome relationship. Equal give and take. She is a lady all the way and loves Nick dearly and proud of who he is and what he used to do and can still do with ease. He is a former cop who married very well and has good business sense. He is a keen investigator and he clearly adores his wife. I live the flirting they do with each other and the not taking any guff. They are terrific. My husband and I live watching the movies every year.

There are two really, really great screen partnerships between a man and a woman, particularly cast as marrieds. One of them is Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. In their films, which present a range of very different marriages (some that work brilliantly, others that...don't), their rapport, chemistry and realness is very refreshing.

The only screen couple I can think of who equal their magic, is Myrna Loy and William Powell. I've seen them in a few other films before (Manhattan Melodrama, Evelyn Prentice, I Love You Again). Now, I've finally bought the complete Thin Man collection. I've watched The Thin Man and, needless to say, their magic continues. Particularly, I also really love their relationship. It is some form of ideal simply because they adore each other, they can laugh at themselves and each other, and the marriage works.

They made a good couple. William Powell and Myrna Loy had good chemistry together. I'm sure that they enjoyed working together. All of the movies that they were in together are good.
