Who was Guild?

There was someone called Guild in The Thin Man cast (Nat Pendleton), but I don't recall who he was, because I don't think the name Guild was ever spoken. Was he one of the police?

John Guild was the lieutenant. The Police Officer who did all the talking throughout the movie.
