In all the movies following this one, the words "THE THIN MAN" are employed, leading viewers to believe that was Nick's alter-ego.
That was true even on the TV series, starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk.
Whereas, the "thin man" was a murder victim, played by Edward Ellis!

Was MGM afraid that the public wouldn't respond to the sequels unless this monicker was part of the title?

I think it was more a case of the name had already stuck.
