Which Thin Man film did you like the most?

I've seen them all and I loved first film, The Thin Man (1934). the others in the series were okay, but couldn't compare to the first.

The first was my favorite too. I saw it at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood a few years ago. Seeing it on the big screen was a revelation. Here's how I'd rate it and the sequels:

1. The Thin Man (1934)
2. After The Thin Man (1936)
3. Another Thin Man (1939)
4. The Thin Man Goes Home (1944)
5. Song of the Thin Man (1947)
6. Shadow of the Thin Man (1941)

I watch them all fairly regularly (I have the boxed set), and I pretty much rank them in the order they were made -- the original being my favorite, the first sequel being a close second, etc. But there's an exception at the end of the list: I like Song of the Thin Man(the last one) better than the fifth installment in the franchise, The Thin Man Goes Home, which I rank last.

This first one. Once the child was born it all went to hell.

I agree.
What the hell did they need with a kid when they had Asta?

The Thin Man is my favorite. It is one of those classic films that is timeless. The chemistry between Powell/Loy is amazing. You don't see these kind of films anymore. Wish they made films like this now.

After The Thin Man, the second one! I loved Jessie Ralph as Aunt Katherine, and Elissa Landi as her daughter. Then the first one, and the others in the order that they were made.

The first one.

I actually like the second one the best, but not by much. I think while the cinematography actually works quite well in the first one, the production values were better in the later films. and that showed. It was also amusing to see a very young Jimmy Stewart in the second, and I love the scene when they get home and there's a party going on in their house.

those coming later, though, lost some of the freshness of the first two, but After still had it.

But again, not by much. Both are excellent.

The first is the best. It was totally new and fresh. Also as others have noted, once they had little Nicky they couldn't be such bon vivants and had to act more responsible. I also like The Thin Man Goes Home better than most people for its portrayal of small town America.
