I have seen this movie many times over the last 40 years and styles have come and gone but Nora always looks like a million bucks in that striped dress she wears to her party on Christmas Eve. I always think it is red and white like a Christmas candy cane. Does anyone know the real color?
I LOVE that dress. I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I once had a color pic that showed it clearly, but I'm not sure what happened to it. It's not red and white, but you're close. Here is a lobby card from The Thin Man that shows a little bit of it so you can see:
Thanks for the sleuthing. It does look like a kind of rusty red. After I posted this I was noticing that the rest of Nora's wardrobe is also fabulous. I wish I could dress like Nora Charles for a day.
My second favorite article of clothing is the "Screwy Hat" she wears in the next movie.
I am a redhead also. No one knows this anymore because it has turned silver and gray. I'm still a redhead though. I wish women still wore hats like Myrna Loy.
How about when Nick asks Nora if she has a dress to wear to the party at which he is going to unmask the murderer and she replies "Yes, I've got a lulu". A lulu! I love that.
Lulu is a slang term, dating from 1886, popular in the '20's' 30's, and '40's. It means some thing or person that is remarkable, outstanding, special, unique, extreme, and/or exciting. Note, one would not say "..a lulu dress," instead, "...a dress that is a lulu," or "..a lulu of a dress." Origin unknown, possibly from earlier slang "looly" "beautiful girl," also of unknown origin. One definition I found ; " a very attractive or seductive looking woman." Ms Loy herself is a lulu, in several senses of the word. I can imagine what that dress must be like, in fact I can imagine a lot of stuff concerning Myrna Loy, but this is not the place for that.

I'm not an etymologist by any means, but one possibility with regard to the "very seductive" part:
It is possible that it may be related to the central character in the G. W. Pabst German silent movie Pandora's Box (based to a significant degree on a couple German plays written in the 1890s, which in turn was partly based on a French novel from 1888). The seductiveness of that Lulu is, in many ways, her defining characteristic.
The character was prominent enough that, from what I've read, the German public responded to American Louise Brooks being cast in the role in much the same way that Southern Americans initially responded to Brit Vivien Leigh being cast as Scarlett O'Hara.

Ha me too! I like the candy cane twist Holiday red & white idea. That's how they should color it in remake if they dare. Casting of Nora will be a real cat fight! Need beauty, class & brains. There are several with a few of those traits but who has the whole package? Can see plenty of the babe look, but to also have the flair & moxie.... hmm Need the flipness & style of a Debra Messing but she lacks that Itness. Someone along those lines tho. Kim Basinger if wasn't so typecast as cold. But please none of the doughy leading ladies of today with all their baggage. Keep it fresh. Guys can almost be anyone but getting the fem right is key. Right now it's all housewifey films or bitches. Maybe a Kirsten Dunst who has solid creds, class, and not overexposed. Ideas?
hmm.. Mol is about the right age and even the height 5' 6". Wouldn't dominate the male lead who'd likely be cut in thin man mold. Haven't followed her career since the time of her famous magazine cover that hyped her so much out of seemingly no where at the time. It tried too hard to place the newbie into A ranks Could have worked but timing just not right. The Notorious Bettie Page film brought her back into my radar again. That was a daring, fantastic choice well played. I take your word for her sense of justice not being aware of any special comedic timing. She certainly has screen poise and eye candy. Wouldn't take a production long to see if she had the necessary timing. Trick is to not fall into th Kid man idea of Bewitched. Yes, somethings can look good on paper but just not really jell in the end. Her style and choice of films has her following to get The Thin Man launch. The key is if she carried it off given that a hit would lead to as many as 3-5 more in the series. There's been a few lookalikes done recently in this vein like Mr & Mrs Smith so Thin Man would have to be killer to avoid getting lost in the crowd. Other thing that might help is if it came out 2 years from now and the US is on a big Recovery and in the mood for glitz again. True Grit era now might have made for a little resentment about the rich who gained a record 255 times the average net assets in 2009. Biggest gap between top 1% (N&N types) and Joes. All the best. hmm Just read this today. For an alternate reality pairing, how about these two for a contemporary approach? Granted they are in the Mr. and Mrs. Smith mold of Brad & AJ as The It thing. But I sense a touch more high end class to these two that would be in keeping with our beloved N&N. Exactly ... or even a creamy/white and cherry red. My aunt had a couch in these colors (striped) and it was next to where they put up the Christmas tree when I was a kid. It actually looked edible - as edible as Myrna in that dress. Mmmmmmmmmm ....
I love the furniture in the apartments - very elegant and then in Nick and Nora's, it's same style but with ditzy dashes added here and there - I think it expresses Nora - rich and elegant but a crazy streak (or she would never have married Nick).
I watched it today, for the first time on a flat screen. It was wonderful to see all the details in the sets and clothes. The women wear sparkly jewelry, and beautiful clothes, and furs. The men's clothes perfectly tailored. I loved the loose black pants Nora wore Christmas morning,
I agree. She looked good in that dress. I think that she looked good in anything that she wore. She was an attractive woman. The dresses that women wore back then were nice. I wish that women still dressed like that.
