Gorgeous film
Whatever else may be said of it, this is a class production all the way in terms of photography, production design and editing. I'm so glad they had a wonderful print to work from. It's not a masterpiece, but there's something instructive and interesting about watching run-of-the-mill entertainment from a particular era. It tells you more about people of a particular period sometimes to check out -- not a masterpiece, which transcends all periods -- but something that encapsulates the tastes of their time. Dix is one of those actors who trained in silents, and although he handles his lines all right, he really uses his face and eyes -- giving almost a parallel performance. Take away the soundtrack, put in titles, and his performance would work equally well.
