Deserves some love

TCM rarely shows British sound films as old as 1934 and so it was a great suprise to see them show such a charming comedy. Michael Powell directing, so it has a nice polish and Nancy O'Neil is absolutely adorable.

Don't make me laugh, your kung fu is so so.

Nancy is very good, Ian Hunter is very good, Muriel George is very good as Mrs Badger. But Billy (John Singer) steals every scene he's in.

It's a clever script with some nice twists and it's a very well made film.

These "Quota" films that Powell made from 1931-36 were made very cheaply and very quickly. But they gave him an opportunity to learn his craft. You can often see him trying out ideas that he then does again, and does better, in the major films he made with Pressburger.

Sadly, some of these early films are "Missing, Believed Lost" with no known copies available and no negatives either. So cherish the ones that have survived

I know the movie is categorized as a comedy but I don't think of it as particularly funny. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is charming and adorable, even humorous at times but overall it's not exactly a comedy.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

Yes, I agree that it was not especially funny. And the first part was basically mostly depressing. Michael Powell had not yet hit his stride, but it's worth seeing for it's historical value in surveying Powell's work.
