Yes it is, and I'm sure there are far fewer posts here than there were last time I looked.

Such a shame, as Marlene is radiant in this, even more so than usual. Other performances are pretty damn good too. And the sets! Magnificent!

This movie IS indeed famous, but it's rarely seen. I've read about it in books on film but it wasn't until years and years later that TCM showed it (last night). Without TCM, we would never see such stuff, we'd have nothing but westerns, fat guys hankering after "hot girls", rom-coms, and bad sci-fi. Nothing wrong with that stuff, but The Scarlet Empress is a unique treasure that has been hidden. For decades!

While I'm glad you got a chance to see it - and it *is* a gorgeous movie - it's been available on tape / DVD in the US since 1998 and in the UK since 2000 (not to get into the 16mm versions floating around). And multiregion DVD players are your friend. You gotta get out there and poke around!

Also, FYI: TCM showings of rare movies are often (not always, and probably not in this case, but often) tied to release schedules for DVDs. This ran on TCM in late 2000 / early 2001, shortly before Criterion put it out on DVD. (I think that was when it did an art house run, as well.) This showing could be - *could* be - tied to a BluRay version (although I haven't heard anything like that, but I haven't been following things that closely recently). So if you see something on TV, you should keep an eye out for a possible release.

For the OP: this is imdb. I think more people here are into popular (and into being wacky on the internets, frankly) than famous / classic / whatever you want to call it.

Actually, I wouldn't call it relatively famous.

black and white movies were better
