Herbert Marshall's character is such a beast.

Mary (Norma Shearer) deserves so much better than this stick-in-the-mud who doesn't believe in her.

Janet! Donkeys!

She knew who he was when she married him. When he threatens divorce she runs back to the boyfriend wannabe and makes the rumors fact. I felt sorry for Phillip.

Mary is the beast. She's beyond despicable and self-centered.

Even though she initially didn't do anything too wrong, she still behaved badly and she owed it to Phillip to give him the time to let emotion subside and see things clearly.

Instead of being patient with someone she supposedly loved, regarding a situation that was completely her fault, she immediately ran to the arms of another man, the very man who was involved in the "misunderstanding".

She made the infidelity a fact, and she is beyond contemptible. All she cared about was herself, and she continued to lie and lie about the fact she's a horrible human being. She was even ready to completely give up her daughter. They don't come much lower than that.

Don't worry about Herbert Marshall. Bette Davis got even with him several times.
