You could see he was trying really hard to recapture the action and romance of his silent films, but falls short. It just seems very labored to us. We don't think his voice matched what we expected it to be, unlike his Son Doug Jr. who sounds just right. John Gilbert had the same problem, nothing wrong actually, just did not match up with what audiences' expected. Unlike Ronald Colman or Wallace Beery their voices matched well too their looks.
