The Mystery of the Shocking Crime

I tuned in late and didn't quite get the reason Iris' husband killed himself.

Other posters suggested he had a gay relationship with her brother, but that seems a stretch. Someone else said he was a thief that had syphilis, but what one thing has to do with the other is beyond me.

When the reason is revealed to the father in the end, it is said that he served prison time for a shocking crime.

The information about his past came in the form of a letter that a woman slipped to Iris. Was it ever mentioned what connection this woman had to Iris' husband?

They could be very subtle about implying things in movies back then, I was wondering if I missed something in the beginning. Did they ever make any allusions to rape?

Maybe, we are just meant to imagine whatever horror of the past was bad enough to kill oneself over. Something to keep us keenly interested.

I loved that there was secrecy throughout, that there was something so bad, it was not to be spoken.

In the novel it was based on, "The Green Hat," he killed himself because he had syphilis.
