Fields could be a very touching actor

Most famous for his rasping bluster, I think Bill Fields could show genuinely moving moments in his films. Two great examples here: when he overhears the father of his daughter's fiancé give a devastating (but honest) opinion of McGonigle's acting ability, and the way he lies to allow his daughter to marry and find happiness. The look on Fields face as he embraces her is heartbreaking.

I thought so too. I was very pleasantly surprised. Reminded me of some of Buster Keaton's more tender moments in his silent flicks.
