The police interview with the good Doctor's cat-farming neighbour seems to be the pretty direct inspiration for 'How to Skin a Cat' from Husker Du's 1985 album New Day Rising!

Yes, I realized what was going to happen the minute the cat farm guy started his spiel. Apparently Mould and Grant watched a LOT of old movies at one point in their career. Good catch!
