Oh, that WARDROBE!

Just to DIE for.

This movie is like a William Somerset Maughm story. Perfect to read some Maughm short stories in the hot weather, tall glass of limeade or a gin rickey nearby. No air conditioning back in old Mandalay, but everyone was dressed to kill in the 100 degree heat and humidity. Slow boat to Mandalay, to escape my sordid past? If I was 40 years younger, sign me on, lol!

Agreed; I'm watching it now! My grandmother's wedding dress (1922) was exactly that type of sheerness--so lovely!!

Oh my this is ironic. I just left a response to a comment about the beautiful clothing worn by Constance Bennett in "Sin Takes A Holiday" where I mentioned the clothes in this film. It turns out you left both comments. I had seen Mandalay some time ago and loved the wardrobe. I noticed it was available on demand again so I suggested it before I came to this message board and found your comment. Anyway we're on the same page.

As much as I adore the clothing, I cannot imagine how difficult the washing and care must have been. There was a series on A&E back in the 1990s entitled "House of Elliott". If either of you are interested, that is a definite series to watch! I am thinking about getting it on Amazon; the price just went down!
