So What if it's not a Documentary

Personally, I don't think Man from Aran was meant to be a documentary. After all, the filmmakers said so several times. They never claimed to be anthropologists or other academicians. Plus Robert Flaherty's other famous films (Nanook of the North 1922 and Louisiana Story aka Cajun 1948) were also a mix of created scenarios and staged scenes. There is even a word for it, ethnofiction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnofiction

People should just relax and enjoy the entertaining films (or filums as the Aran folks say) without trying to overthink everything.

Folks on Aran can get upset if they like. After all, the story movie is part of their personal history. There is no way to do justice to their whole culture in a movie only 77 minutes long including credits. Although some of the younger men may learn something by listening to the women in their community instead of being all defensive. That one guy was ridiculous trying to argue about stuff that happened before he was born.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.
