Which DVD version of Liliom to buy?

If you want to purchase Liliom on DVD don't buy the Kino version, instead buy Fox's two Disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Carousel. Why? Because you get the movie Carousel on Disc 1 plus you get a marvelously clear, almost scratch-free black and white transfer of the 1934 Fritz Lang-directed version of Liliom on Disc 2. That's right, Fox throws in the 1934 version of Liliom as an Extra which is, in fact, superior in video quality to Kino's version of Liliom. If you shop at the right merchant you can purchase the two Disc Carousel for less money than the cost of Kino's Liliom.

I purchased the Rodgers and Hammerstein box set which includes the 50th Anniversary Edition of Carousel and didn't even realize I was getting the 1934 version of Liliom on Disc 2 until about a month later I read Barrie Maxwell's column at http://www.thedigitalbits.com where he was reviewing the entire box set in his 12/12/06 column.

I wish I'd known that. The Kino print is not very good, and that's what I just watched. A better print might have helped a bit. The movie is terribly slow, despite Charles Boyer's marvelous performance and Fritz Lang's way with a camera. I did like the last half hour, but it was a chore getting there.
