Naruse Newbie

This was my introduction to Naruse and I'm already a huge fan. Very sophisticated visual storytelling for the time and a deeply humanistic touch. Surprised it has so few votes for a film available on DVD (and YouTube)

I echo your sentiments to such an extent that I won't bother creating another thread to say the same things. Street Without End was also my first Naruse film and I found myself hooked early on. In addition to what you said, I was also impressed with the ease at which the quietly hysterical comic relief moments involving the painter was woven into the tragic misunderstandings and regret.
I find this to be better than any of the Ozu silents I've seen and that is not intended as a knock against Ozu.
