Disappointing and Hays Code changes? *spoilers*.

Here be spoilers so stop reading if you don't want them.

I was disappointed in this film and a lot of that probably has to do with time period morals.

The truth is Odette was a tramp and Paul was a habitual philanderer. I cannot understand the guilt Francoise was feeling. Personally, she should have done away with them both and then traveled the world sipping on cocktails as a rich widow.

The other thing that bothered me was the complete lack of reaction by Paul to Costelli's confession. I would think, even for just a moment, that he would doubt his conviction of Francoise.

I would think that taking into account that Costelli confessed, he would wonder about Francoise's confession, perhaps finding that it was a "convenient confession" and wonder if Francoise just used the coincidence of Odette's murder by Costelli, to get to Paul.

That's not what happened though. Not once did his judgement and conviction of her falter, for even just a moment.

I know that the Hays Code began in 1934, the very year this one came out. I wonder though how the original French film, which obviously didn't have a Hays Code, went. Does anyone know?

The film had promise, but failed on these points in my opinion.

I'm with you. The husband was an insufferable cheating creep. Odette was taking away her marriage which was her whole life. There was no scorn at his cheating..Liked Ruth Chatterton a lot.
