Why did Harold (W.C. Fields) refer to blind man as 'honey' and 'dear' ?


This was early in the film in Harold's grocery store. Was that somewhat common then? I've never noticed in any films from that era. No, I don't think the character or W.C. was gay. I have seen this film many times and just noticed it for the first time today.

I think this was just the 1930s version of political correctness. Harold is being extra polite and courteous to a clumsy handicapped person who he would secretly rather choke the (beep) out of.

He is treating Mr Muckle as a child. One speaks to children with little terms of endearment.
