Delilah's Death and Funeral

For a film that "puts down blacks," as so many revisionists here claim, the writers certainly devoted a lot of time to Delilah's sad untimely death and funeral! In fact, I CRIED BUCKETS and have to say that that was probably one of the SADDEST, if not THE SADDEST, scene(s) in a movie that I've ever seen. (Peola's guilt-ridden sobbing made it even worse!!)

Bea's pain upon losing her friend was heartrending. Note also that Bea saw to it that her good friend got EXACTLY the funeral that she had so desperately wanted, making all the arrangements, etc. since at that point Peola wasn't around. That little fact is overlooked by the snarky critics of this movie.

I can also say that Delilah's character was WARM, GIVING, and LOVING, which is no doubt why she was so endearing. One has to BOND with a character, and that's exactly what Delilah did -- she bonded with you on a HUMAN level, no matter what color. But EVERYTHING has to be about race, so we're not allowed to point this out. /S

I agree.

I haven't read the book yet but someone told me that in the book

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Peola refused to attend the funeral and never showed up.

I personally saw Delilah was a loving altruist where Bea is more self centered and not as focused on her daughter or the feelings of others.

In the 1959 film isn't she watching from a distance or something?

Wow! The fact Peola never attends the funeral... That is a shocking.

Peola goes to the funeral. She cries and women around her ask if she knows the deceased. She is spotted by Bea and Jessie. Peola cries on Bea's shoulder, "I killed my mother".
