Dash Dash

They use "dash dash" a lot, is that said as an euphemism for swearing? Did they really use that euphemism back then? This is the only movie I have ever heard it used in.

I'm sure "Dash!" was an English upper-crust euphemism for "Damn!" as in "Dash it all [Mr Rothschild]!" -- which was a common oath short of swearing. It was in the day, not long ago, when swearing in public was very, very lowlife. My grandparents in the States, even in the 1960s, would have bit their tongue out before saying "Damn!" in public.

I thought it stood for "god-damned." I think "goddam" was too much even for pre-code Hollywood.

reply

In those days or up until 1960's people didn't wear in public, and some not in private.

reply

I think MOST not in public.

reply

Yeah, I like it, it's better than many other euphemism's used even today. I've never heard it used in any other movie.
