Have you noticed

This film's theme is repeated a lot but while watching the remake with Robert Sterling & Marsha Hunt (I'll Wait for You 1941) it occurred to me that this film was the basis for Witness starring Harrison Ford. Ford's character is not a gangster but a police officer hiding out but still has to hide out in a rural area with the Amish to protect his young witness while the crime is solved. But it does include the love story between the hider & the young widow of the Amish community. In this one & the remake the woman is an older sister to the younger sibling, though.

This also reminded me a great of John Wayne's "Angel and the Badman"

It's also very similar to The Life of Jimmy Dolan and the remake, They Made Me a Criminal, except the very end, when our hero is set free by the cops to return to the farm and his lady love.
