Battle scenes in this film vs. '300'

Hello,

Can anyone who has seen both films comment on how the two battles scenes (although I guess the one in Cleopatra was actually a montage) stack up against each other?

Yes, I know that the montage in Cleopatra is primitive by today's standards. At the same time, I have to wonder if all the CGI being put into films is actually undermining filmmaking (i.e. lazy directors use CGI to create fake-looking scenes that are an audience turn-off).

I saw this on the big-screen yesterday and found the battle montage quite moving.

When I first saw the deMille version, maybe 50 years ago, I was impressed by the battle montage, looked for it when I got a DVD a few years back, remembered and looked for it, and yes, still pretty good battle impression.

you honestly have no idea what you're talking about; storytelling versus CGI?

the director does not make such decisions.

it's the producer who: 1) hires the writers/creators of the story, and 2) hires the director to run the set operations and interpret the script, and 3) forks-out the money for CGI if he wants/needs it.

before CGI there were countless methods to trick the eye.

have you ever studied filmmaking, or set foot in a studio?
